Dear Prof. Coppola,

Life uncovers a different story for everyone. Every day is a new chapter and a new beginning. Therefore, we may also define life as a book that is constantly being written. Every page is full of mistakes, failures, successes, and experiences. Life can be unpredictable sometimes because even though we try our best to do the right thing, perfection is the word humans cannot be defined with. My life experiences and the environment I grew up in have shaped my perceptions of life, which ultimately have motivated me to pursue a career in science, specifically as a dentist. When I was about seven years old, I used to eat a lot of candies and chocolates, which caused cavities in my teeth. If at that moment I was not treated by a dentist I could have ended up having enamel infection. This experience shaped a positive perception of dentists in my mind, which is the reason I want to pursue it as a career.

For me, life began when I entered this world crying at my uncle’s hospital. I grew up in Gujranwala, a small town in Pakistan. My dad worked as a Senior Police Officer and my mother, as a high school teacher. I remember my childhood as a golden period of my life far from the edge, having nothing to worry about or lose. My parents wanted the best in life for me, so they chose to put me in a private school named Beaconhouse School System. This school is one of the most expensive schools in Pakistan since it is one of the oldest international standard schools. As I was living in a country that was struggling with the literacy rate, attending a private school was a huge perk for me, and I will be forever thankful to my parents for this. I give the credit for everything I am today to my parents and my teachers, who taught me to believe in my dreams and be confident to pursue them no matter what.

As for languages, I am fluent in English, Urdu, and Punjabi, and I also understand basic Arabic. Among my favorite hobbies are soccer, tennis, drawing, and painting. I have a sportsmanlike spirit for every challenge life gives me. I do not quit easily, in fact, I am a warrior who would fight till the end.

Life is a thrilling roller coaster ride, and very unpredictable. Because of their passion to pursue their dreams, and because they wanted to live with a better life, my family decided to move to America. Living in a third world country can be very different than most people imagine, and our vision was crystal clear. My father knew Pakistan would not provide us with the opportunities we want in life. America has one of the best systems for higher education, so he chose America. Life in America is a world apart from Pakistan. I love how diverse it is, and how I can interact with people from all walks of life. I have made amazing friends, experienced different cultures, and tried new foods. After having great support from my teachers at Valley Stream North High, I was able to get into City College of New York. It is a new start for me, and I am absolutely passionate and excited about my college career. It has been an amazing journey so far.

We all have dreams we want to make a reality. I believe hard work will help me achieve what I want in life. I want to become a dentist because I believe I will love it as a profession. I love to help people and interact with others because ever since my childhood I have seen my parents helping others. I did not consider myself as a science person until sixth grade, when I got the opportunity to present in an annual science fair. I built a hydro-electric project and impressed my teachers. This appreciation alone boosted my self-confidence enough to make me believe that I could pursue a career in science one day. With time, my interest in science strengthened, so I decided to take biology in high school. If you ask me “Why biology,” the answer is simple: It is about human bodies, and the way human bodies function fascinates me. When I was in 10th grade I got an award for getting the highest marks in biology at my school. This was the time when I developed the idea of changing this passion into a career.

I dream of learning further about biology in order to benefit others and myself. I took this writing class because I assumed it would help me in the future by teaching me essential reasoning skills. Moreover, I think this writing course will help me score better at MCAT, the Medical College Admission Test, and ultimately support my dream future. I hope my tomorrow accommodates the world for the better.

Yours Sincerely,

Hassan Fayyaz
